Special Event Routing

The flight route from Apia to Wellington is not the standard route flown real-world (which are routes via Auckland and is approximately ten minutes longer). The event route has been selected to keep the aircraft better aligned with the main flow of traffic to/from Wellington and facilitates event traffic management. It also has the added bonus of adding an extra helping of scenery to your flight, including Tonga, the Kermadec Islands, and White Island during the oceanic section. The last forty-five minutes of the flight traverse the eastern ranges of New Zealand's North Island, affording views of Lake Taupo and the mountains of the Volcanic Plateau.

Pilots taking part in the event are STRONGLY encouraged to file the event flight plan rather than the real world one. Aircraft on the official event routes may receive priority handling by ATC during the event ahead of those on other non-event routes, and during this Wave will definitely fly over more spectacular scenery!
