Rotorua Airport (NZRO)

Rotorua International Airport (NZRO/ROT) serves the largest centre in the North Island's Volcanic Plateau. Since New Zealand's founding, the geothermal wonders of the Rotorua region have been an important part in the national identity, and a significant draw-card for travellers the world over. As well as seeing significant domestic traffic, it is also a growing international gateway with the recent introduction of regular direct flights to Australia.

The main runway (18/36) is 1,762m (5,781ft) and is serviced by a terminal area to the east of the runway. Note: in older sceneries, the runway may appear at its pre-extension length of 1622m.

Of particular interest to pilots is the displaced approach to 36R which requires a left hand turn on short final to align with the runway.

Because of the runway length, and the limited parking area at the terminal, most real-world flights are operated by B737/A320 or below.

The passenger apron and terminal is to the east of the runway at mid-field. Depending on the active runway, pilots may need to backtrack for arrivals and departures and should endeavour to do so as quickly as is possible to minimise delays to other flights.

Note: terminal space is limited in the default FS scenery. Pilots should ensure they have FS set to ignore damage from contact with other aircraft as the confined space increases the chances of other pilots connecting to the network in your location. Pilots wishing to spectate after their arrival should request taxi to parking either on the west side of the runway, or on the grass area to the north of the passenger apron.

RNAV Arrivals

All Rotorua STARs route via MIKER to the north-west of the city.

The flight route from Hobart to Rotorua has been specially designed for this event to maximise the amount of New Zealand's scenery pilots will see during their flight.

As a result, aircraft will be approaching Rotorua from the south, and pilots should expect vectors to the active RNAV, VOR/DME, or visual approach.

Note: there is no ILS approach at Rotorua. Pilots who are uncomfortable flying either an RNAV, VOR/DME, or visual approach, should consider Auckland International (NZAA) (approximately 100nm north) as an alternate.

Departures

Flights departing Rotorua for overseas destinations can expect to be assigned one of the following departures depending on the active runway.
